Ford recalls more than 1M vehicles due to issue with rearview camera

Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) has announced a safety recall affecting more than 1 million vehicles across its Ford and Lincoln brands due to a software glitch that is compromising the rearview camera system.
The defect can cause the rearview camera display to freeze, delay, or fail to appear when the vehicle is in reverse, significantly increasing the risk of an accident by obstructing the driver's rear visibility.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 1.1 million vehicles are affected. The recall affects several popular models, including the Ford F-150, Bronco, Mustang Mach-E, and Lincoln Navigator.
The glitch originates from a software error within the Ford Sync infotainment system, specifically affecting the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) that controls the rearview camera display.
The error can lead to unexpected system resets, which may result in the screen freezing, displaying a black screen, or failing to show the camera feed altogether. Notably, there are no warning signs before the issue occurs, leaving drivers unaware of the malfunction until it affects their visibility.
There has been one minor accident involving property damage linked to this issue, but no injuries have been reported to date.
To remedy the issue, Ford will provide a free software update to the APIM, which can be done during an in-person servicing at a dealership or via an over-the-air software update, where available. Affected vehicle owners will begin receiving notification letters starting June 16.
