Ford recalls Expedition and Navigator SUVs in the US due to brake line issues
Published: 12:52 15 May 2025 EDT
Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) has issued a safety recall for nearly 274,000 SUVs in the United States due to a defect that could lead to brake failure.
The recall affects certain 2022 to 2024 model year Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators.
The issue stems from front brake lines that may have been improperly installed during production at Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant.
In affected vehicles, the brake lines can rub against the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, potentially causing damage and brake fluid leaks. Left unaddressed, this could result in partial or total loss of braking capability.
Drivers may notice symptoms such as increased brake pedal travel, reduced braking effectiveness, the illumination of the brake warning light, or a gradual drop in brake fluid levels.
Ford estimates that only about 1% of the recalled vehicles actually have the defect.
As of mid-April 2025, the automaker said it has received 45 warranty claims related to leaking brake lines but is not aware of any accidents or injuries connected to the issue.
The recall includes approximately 223,315 Ford Expeditions and 50,474 Lincoln Navigators built before November 20, 2024. That date marks the implementation of an updated engine installation procedure at the Kentucky plant to prevent the brake line from being bent during assembly.
Dealers were notified on May 14, and owner notification letters will be sent between May 26 and May 30.
Owners of affected vehicles are advised to check their SUV’s recall status using the NHTSA recall lookup tool or by visiting Ford’s recall website and referencing recall ID 25S47. If affected, they should schedule an inspection promptly and be alert to any brake performance warning signs.
Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the front brake lines and the air cleaner outlet pipe. Damaged components will be replaced free of charge.
Shares of Ford traded up 1% at $10.75 in the early afternoon on Thursday.
